Bat Management Solutions

All FBN management projects are conservation based and research oriented. Our long term research with urban bat populations began in 1993, while FBN Founder, Laura Finn, was working toward her Masters degree at UCF. Her Masters research involved comparing microclimate in a variety of bat houses and occupied roosts to determine the optimal bat house design. All occupied roosts in her study were buildings occupied by ’nuisance’ colonies. It was here that we observed, first hand, the vulnerability of these populations — and began to realize urban bat populations are silently declining.

Documentation related to urban colonies collected before, during and after our population management projects, includes monitoring and observation data on species, structure type, weather, population status, activity and behavior, availability and success of roost mitigation, predation, use of alternate roosts, etc.. Observations on survival, reproductive success, and roost selection of evicted urban colonies reveal the importance of public education that describes the importance of updated methodology, timing and roost mitigation.

We hope to make Fly By Nights site another resource with links to updated info on urban bats, in addition to pointing out information sources we feel need revision or updating.

When Fly By Night, Inc began, in 1993, we were the only Florida organization focused 100% on local bats and bat conservation and remain the only conservation organization that maintains the philosophy that even the worse bat ‘problem’ can have a resolution where everyone benefits — simply by helping bats. All that is required is a little hard work, diligence, patience, common sense, an open mind and a deep respect for doing the right thing.

FBN uses proven exclusion methods that are Guaranteed safe and effective. The caulk tube exclusion method detailed on BCI’s Bats in Buildings webpage (Do-it-Yourself methods excerpted from the BIB Handbook) was invented by FBN co-founder Thomas Finn. FBN tubes act as special one-way doors that allow the bats to leave the structure safely (= eviction), but prevents them from reentering.
