Bat Management Methods

What Causes Mortality & Why You Should Care

Bats in buildings are constantly at risk

and urban bat populations are in decline — any structural modification that limits access to & from the roosting area or alters the roost microclimate .  The primary cause of mortality is starvation  unable to leave a roost after an access hole is blocked exclusion related, but ‘accidental ‘mortality is often the first indicator of an urban colony.  Exclusion related mortality can be direct or indirect, direct mortality is almost always the result of  misinformation & ignorance —  caused by people who simply  ‘didn’t know’.  This unintentional mortality occurs when methods were used incorrectly (often by professionals who should know better.  Urban colonies are also at risk of intentional mortality

When bats are trapped in the roost site & unable to exit, mortality can be significant — often 100’s or 1000’s of bats slowly dehydrate & starve to death  then begin to decompose inside the walls, ceiling & attic - depending on the structure, an unusual odor or stain  may be noticed after several days or weeks   In many cases costly cleanup & even building repair is required, but often the event may occur silently = hidden for years,
